Biomedical Research and Introduction to Medical Careers Internship- Webb Waring Center

Webb-Waring has been tied historically to the Colorado research community for the better part of a century. Originally founded by Dr. Gerald B. Webb and Dr. James J. Waring in 1924 as a free standing institute for the study of tuberculosis, Webb-Waring has a long-standing history of innovative medical research as well as teaching.

Recently, Webb-Waring relocated as a new center of research within the University of Colorado. The center's motivated staff and investigators maintain the high standard of research excellence established by our founders while focusing on their mission of creating and teaching innovative health care related research and discoveries.

Our scientists are conducting important medical research in inflammation, immunology, and oxidative stress as it relates to health and disease and more specifically to Type 1 Diabetes, Multiple Sclerosis, Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome, Age-Related Macular Degeneration, Atherosclerosis, aging and other common conditions. This central and unifying theme for the Center's research brings all of the Center's scientists and staff together creating a highly efficient integrated investigative team. Oxidative stress is the common detrimental process that happens when our normal defense mechanisms are overwhelmed. Oxidative stress is produced when we use oxygen as well as when we encounter cigarette smoke, air pollution or following inflammation, exhaustive exercise, drugs, diseases and aging. Oxidative stress damages key molecules that account for the development of disease and contribute to aging.
