Baltimore Innovation Week is organized into 7 different Track Days (Civic, Explore, Science & Education, Creative & Media, Dev, Business, and Access). You can filter for events that match your interests by clicking on one of the track icons.

Chris Curtis


Chris is an SMB Community Engagement Coordinator on the Small and Medium Business team in Menlo Park, CA. He focuses on showcasing how small businesses are using Facebook and on helping small business communities better understand how to use Facebook to connect and grow. Chris is especially passionate about working with small businesses having watched his father start and run a small business, and seeing the time and dedication it requires. Chris was born and raised in Philadelphia and graduated from the University of Michigan with a Bachelors in Business Administration and a minor in Sustainability.

Alissa Starzak


Alissa Starzak is the Head of Public Policy at Cloudflare, a web performance and security company that is on a mission to help build a better Internet. Cloudflare protects and accelerates more than 10 million web properties worldwide, with customers ranging from individual blogs to small businesses to Fortune 500 companies.
Prior to joining Cloudflare, Alissa worked for the U.S government in a variety of national security positions. Most recently, she served as the 21st General Counsel of the Department of the Army, after confirmation by the Senate. Before her appointment as Army General Counsel, Alissa served as the Deputy General Counsel (Legislation) of the U.S. Department of Defense, advising on legal issues with a legislative or congressional component and managing an office of attorneys responsible for developing the Department of Defense legislative program. Prior to moving to the Department of Defense, she served as Counsel to the Senate Select Committee on Intelligence and as an Assistant General Counsel at the Central Intelligence Agency’s Office of General Counsel. She also worked in private practice in Washington, D.C., and clerked for The Honorable E. Grady Jolly, U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fifth Circuit.

She graduated from Amherst College and the University of Chicago Law School, where she served as an editor of the University of Chicago Law Review.

James West


Johns Hopkins University Professor James E. West has over 250 patents to his name. He is best known for his work at Bell Labs and  his invention of the electret microphone. Ninety percent of microphones produced annually are his, and can be found in everyday items such as your cellphone. West was inducted into The National Inventors Hall of Fame in 1999 for the invention of the electret microphone. He is a member of the National Academy of Engineering; a Fellow, and past President, of the Acoustical Society of America, and a Fellow of the IEEE. West was awarded the National Medal of Technology and Innovation in 2006 by President George W. Bush, and is also the proud recipient of the Benjamin Franklin Medal in Engineering. In addition to his scientific contributions, West has also served as an advocate for greater diversity in STEM fields serving on the board of countless philanthropic organizations including The Ingenuity Project. Jim is currently working with a local startup, Sonavi Labs, on developing a life- changing smart digital stethoscope with machine-learning algorithms to diagnose respiratory and cardiovascular diseases.

Curtis Funderburk


President and CEO of System Integrity, LLC located in Baltimore; Curtis Funderburk is a Veteran of the U.S. Air Force and a Cisco Certified Networking Instructor.

With over 25 years of design and maintenance experience, he served as a Systems and Test Engineer for corporation like Verizon and Dupont, as well as; the National Institutes of Health, the Food and the Drug Administration and the Office of the Chief Technology Officer in Washington, DC.

He is most proud of his accomplishments as an Instructor at the Veterans Education & Training Center in Washington; where he mentored and trained over 50 military veterans to obtain their network industry certifications and improve their chances of gaining employment after serving our country.

Jake Colvin


As Executive Director of the National Foreign Trade Council's Global Innovation Forum, Jake engages startup, business, and government leaders to elevate the opportunities that exist to be global from Day One, explore the challenges that inhibit success, and emphasize how public policies can support access to the international marketplace. Jake also serves as Vice President for Global Trade and Innovation at NFTC, where he drives key advocacy initiatives around digital trade, innovation and the environment and the Council's engagement in trade bodies including the WTO and APEC. From 2005 until 2008, Jake directed the Council’s USA*Engage coalition, a business effort to promote the benefits of American diplomatic and economic engagement in the world. Jake has written about trade and foreign policy for media including Business Week, Inc. and Politico and has provided analysis for outlets including BBC Radio, CNBC, CNN, NBC News, NPR and Time Magazine.

Gina Carter


Gina Felder-Carter is mother, and wife. Gina has worked in multiple roles within IT upon graduating from Temple University in 2000. Currently she is a Data Analyst at AmeriHealth Caritas. In 2013, she had an opportunity to pursue her passion of digital media. The role as a social media coordinator/ project management for a regional event planning and public relations firm. While serving in this role I quickly learned my passion could potentially align well with my current career.  In 2017 she developed media presence for a couple of restaurants in West Philadelphia. In addition, she continues to enhance her skills by attending several conferences, staying abreast of new technology, and enrolling in free courses.
She has 3 children and enjoys cooking and eating dinner with her family daily.
